Why we get brittle nails and how to make them stronger

Strong and healthy nails can be an indicator of good health, but sometimes they’re not as strong as we’d like them to be. This can be because of external factors such as washing up detergents, or just a lack of good hand care.

Our nails are made up of a protein called keratin and serve as protection for our fingers and toes. Keratin, which also make up the cells in our hair and skin, work to protect damage.

According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology brittle nails fall into two categories: dry and brittle of soft and brittle. Dry and brittle are the result of too little moisture, while soft and brittle are the result of too much moisture.

While underlying health conditions can cause brittle nails, such as an iron deficiency or hyperthyroidism, a good way to tell if the cause is internal or external is by comparing your fingernails to your toenails; if your fingernails are weak but toenails are strong, it’s most likely an external factor, such as overexposure to washing detergents.

1. MINIMISE EXPOSURE TO WATER

Too much soaking in water can cause your nails to become weak and brittle. While impossible to avoid getting your hands wet, it is something to be mindful about.

2. STAY HYDRATED

Water is essential to good health, and nail health is no exception.

3. BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT PRODUCTS YOU’RE USING

Many nail polishes and treatments contain harsh chemicals that can weaken your nails.

Nail polish removers that contains acetone should also be avoided.

4. AVOID USING GELS AND ACRYLICS

While an easy alternative for those who have trouble growing their nails, frequent use can cause your nails to peel which weakens them.

5. KEEP YOUR NAILS SHORT

Long nails are more likely to break and be caught on things.

Short nails are less likely to be chipped, cracked, which help to keep them strong.

6. BE MINDFUL ABOUT HAND SANITISER

In a world where hand sanitiser is now a daily precaution, be mindful because it dries out nails.

So, constantly applying hand sanitiser can be really bad for your nails, so try to avoid them.

7. FILE IN ONE DIRECTION

Filing your nails in a back-and-forth motion like a saw can actually weaken your nails.

File in one direction only.

How to repair damaged nails

Around 20 to 30% of the population are nail biters, and oddly scientists can’t pin-point the exact reason why people bite their nails.

While some believe it’s a nervous habit, people have also been known to bite their nails when they’re bored, frustrated, hungry or engaging in a difficult task. All too often biters can ended with swelling around the nail due to the damage they’ve caused, and bleeding around the cuticles.

Should I Stop Biting My Nails?

Yes. Most nail biters will tell you it’s a difficult habit to quit. This is because for some it’s almost second nature, and most don’t even realise when they’re biting.

However, you should keep in mind that your mouth is home to a lot of bacteria, some of which can cause nail infections, such as warts or herpes. These can be transmitted from your mouth to your fingers and visa versa.

Here are a few tips to help stop nail biting:

1. Keep you nails trimmed and short — Having less nail provides less temptation.

2. Apply a bitter-tasting nail remedy or strengthener — An awful tasting polish will discourage nail biting, while a strengthener will discourage you going after weaker nails.

3. Get regular manicures — Regular, professional manicures can discourage nail biting as your less likely to bite your nails if they look nice.

4. Replace the habit — Replace the unhealthy habit with a better one. Identify your triggers, and instead of biting your nails when you feel nervous, stressed or frustrated turn to a stress ball, chewing gum or and interactive game that keeps your hands busy.

5. Do it gradually — The likelihood is you’ll have one or two fingers your bite more regularly than others. Aim to stop biting your thumbs first, then index, pinky, ring, or middle finger. Take small steps and work towards a point where you eventually stop biting altogether.

How Do I Repair My Nails After Biting?

1. Assess the damage — If you’ve only bitten the ends of your nail, you’re in an okay position. However, if you’ve bitten the skin around the nail and the cuticles, or picked at your nail polish this is more problematic.

Depending on the level of damage, repair could take anywhere fro, a few days to a few weeks. If you’ve thinned the nail plate by biting and picking, repair could take three to six months.

2. Apply cuticle oil and cuticle cream — You want to look for a Cuticle Oil/Cream that contains essential oils, they’re moisturising and penetrate deep into the nail plate to restore natural oils in your nail.

3. Apply a hardener or strengthener — It will give your nails an extra layer of strength that will stop harmful elements weakening them further.

4. Don’t cut your cuticles — Cutting your cuticles only causes more damage and stunts nail growth; they are also important for fighting off infections.

Instead, push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher, orange stick or cotton wool bud.

Seven nail colours set to takeover 2021

While most of us are hoping to see positive changes in 2021, we are still living in a world restricted by COVID-19. With at least three-quarters of the country in tier 3 or higher it means there are still many activities we’re unable to do and/or are limited to.

There are many things women and some men like to indulge in, such as getting our eyebrows done, facials, nails and much more. However, while most beauty salons remain open, many are not operating to their full capacity which means a lot of us are turning to home treatments as an alternative.

Whether you’re a wiz with the nail polish and you’re DIY-ing your manicure or your heading to your local salon, there are a few shades you may want to keep in mind from classic reds and nudes to colours inspired by Pantone’s colours of the year for 2021. So, take a look at the seven shades that will keep you on trend 24/7.

Take your nail game to a whole new level with 15 autumn colours to try in 2020

Nail trends come and go with each passing season, and normally the colours we choose has a lot to do with the time of year. We naturally gravitate towards paler and brighter colours during Spring and Summer, and choose more muted and darker shades in autumn and winter.

Weirdly, nails are not the only time we do this, women also tend to change their hair colour when seasons change, along with the colours in their wardrobe and make-up.

However, sometimes it’s celebrities who inspire trends, for example back in 2018, Kim Kardashian posted a photo of her neon painted toe nails in the sand on Instagram and neon became one of summers biggest trends that year.

Would the neon nail trend have happened without Kim Kardashian?

Probably. There was a lot of neon on the runway that year but she definitely made a huge impacted on the trend.

However, for 2020 when considering your autumn nails colours you might want to trying mixing it up. This year is all about embracing adventurous shades and adopting fresh colours.

We’ve gathered up a variety of nail colours for those who dare to go bold and some for those who prefer to keep it low-key, so you can take your nail game to a whole new level.
