Paul Moneypenny teams up with The Range to give wallpapers a tropical makeover for Spring/Summer 2022

Paul Moneypenny has teamed up with The Range to give wallpapers a tropical makeover this Spring. The designs, inspired by the exquisite beauty of the natural world feature wild botanicals and playful chameleons, insects, parrots and monkeys and is available nationwide online and in stores at The Range.

Starting from just £16.99 per roll, the paste-to-wall, easy to hang wallpaper allows people to update their space with bold colours and busy jungle scenes without a pasting table or hefty price tag.

Speaking of the collection, Paul commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled to bring my vibrant creations to the masses. I have a huge affinity to wallpaper and have worked with it for over ten years, always appreciating design and colour. To have my name on a collection available at one of my favourite pocket-friendly retailers is a dream come true. He added: “My interior style is maximalist meaning I showcase everything I adore in one space.

“It’s a genre which has been around for centuries but has seen a resurgence recently as people make a move away from minimalism and add personality to their homes, displaying things that are meaningful to them.  “To me, the beauty of the tropics creates a sense of wonderment and escapism and I’m delighted to bring that to life for shoppers at The Range.”

In 2021, Belfast-born Moneypenny appeared on Interior Design Masters, a BBC programme where aspiring interior decorators compete against each other by transforming spaces to win their first professional interior design contract.

Paul continued:“The programme was such a great platform for development, I may not have won the grand prize but I came away with the confidence to do what I love. My wallpaper collection is perfect for Summer and offers practical ways to add bold patterns and colours to the home.”

A spokesperson from The Range said: “Homeowners across the country are getting braver with colour and pattern and it’s something our trend forecasters believe we are likely to see gather pace for years to come. “We were really keen to work with Paul as his passion for design is infectious and our customer’s love his signature style. These affordable wallpapers offer luxury for less and will create full-on wow factor walls for those wanting an unmissable style statement.”

Dopamine dressing: How what we wear can improve our mood and well-being

It’s all about bold colours and prints — these dominate the international fashion week circuit year to year, especially in recent seasons.

The trend has officially been coined “dopamine dressing” for its feel-good, mood boosting qualities that are known to improve how the wearer feels.

The great thing about this trend is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways and it’s link to other trends season to season, means it rarely goes out of style.

Wearing bold, colouring and vibrant prints can feel I dominating. But this trend is really about wearing the clothes that make YOU FEEL CONFIDENT. Yes the focus is on the vibrancy and boldness of fashion but at its heart it’s about harnessing your wardrobe to make you FEEL BETTER.

Psychological studies have show that clothing has mind-altering properties and that items of clothing with symbolic meaning can have a direct impact on a persons confidence. Clothing and creating a sense of style has an impact on identity and the way we “choose to be seen” by those around us.

Dopamine dressing is set to be a big trend in 2022, due to COVID-19. After two years of lockdowns, social-distancing and working from home the population is instinctively looking for a way to cheer themselves up, and redefine their identity after loungewear became the norm. While restrictions are still in place in some areas, there is one thing we can still control and it can make us feel better at the same time and that’s what we wear.

Get all the 2022 inspiration you need with Paperchase x Poppy’s Papercuts Collaboration

Paperchase has teamed up with Poppy’s Papercuts, a Brighton based illustrator who specialises in papercutting, to offer a colourful and innovative collection of stationery and lifestyle items that champion female empowerment, wellbeing and support while showcasing the papercutting art that Poppy is known for.

This 17-piece collection includes colourful and inspiring mantras such as ‘On a Mission’, ‘Togetherness’ and ‘Soft & Strong’ on a variety of items from notebooks and water bottles to a stickers and a scrapbook.

These phrases champion themes that are given prevalent as we approach International Women’s Day (8thMarch).

“My friendships have always been really important to me. That mutual love and adoration you have for those who have held you up in dark times. I wanted to channel that incredible feeling you have when someone you love is cheering you on,” said Poppy, Poppy’s Papercuts.

Poppy’s Papercuts for Paperchase Collaboration

Prices range from £4 to £18 and the Paperchase x Poppy’s Papercuts collection has also been thought about from a conscious stance. All single use plastic packaging has been removed from the packaging and the material used for fabric pieces such as the shopper tote are RPET, a material made from post-consumer waste such as plastic bottles.

Catherine Hy, Collections Buyer for Paperchase said: “Everything about this collection, and Poppy herself, epitomises our brand values. It’s bold and playful and undoubtedly ‘Paperchase’.

Collaborating with an independent artist is something we are super excited about and we just know our customer is going to love it.”

The collection will be available to shop in stores and online at paperchase.com from the 13th February 2022.

Veganuary: Our top tips to get you started

Every year people around the world start the 31-day challenge, and maybe this year you’re one of them; or maybe you’re thinking about but but just don’t know how to take the plunge.

Veganism is often defined by what is off the menu such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy plus hidden animal ingredients such as whey (from milk) and gelatine (from animal bones).

But the focus should be on the all the good things vegans do eat, and there has never been a better time to try Veganuary because for almost every animal-derived ingredient and product, there is now a vegan alternative. Instead of meaty burgers, sausage and steaks, there are plant-based versions and instead of dairy cheese on a pizza or cows’ milk vegans choose plant-based versions.

Here are our top tips for Veganuary (first-timers)

1. PLAN, PLAN, PLAN

A meal plan is key to not falling off the wagon. This will also help you know what to shop for.

Some people new to veganism can get hungrier quicker after meals (at first) so carry snacks with you.

2. LOOK OUT FOR ACCIDENTAL VEGAN FOODS

There are so many everyday foods that just happen to be vegan, so take a look in your cupboards and see what you already have.

Believe it or not, some of your favourite biscuits like Biscoff Lotus and Oreos are vegan.

3. BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Going vegan isn’t easy, especially when there are so many hidden animal products in food. So don’t be hard on yourself if you make a few mistakes – it’s a learning process.

For example: Whey – if you’re a protein shake person you’ll need to switch to a vegan protein powder. Whey is the protein in dairy products (lactose is the sugar, whey is the protein). This is why you will often see “whey (MILK)” on the back of food packages. Generally you won’t notice it, unless you’re looking for it; which brings us to our next tip

4. READ FOOD LABELS

Food labels can be tricky at the best of times, but when you’re vegan there are a few things you have to watch out for. An animal derived ingredient won’t be in BOLD like allergy advice, and therefore you have to know the jargon that hides animal products in plain sight. Luckily PETA had a cheat sheet for you.

5. FIND ALTERNATIVES TO YOUR FAVOURITES

Most people think going vegan means giving up their favourite foods – this is not true.

One thing that can help is social media. There are so many accounts dedicated to vegan finds that will help you track down alternatives to your favourite foods and let you know when new foods have hit the shelves.

6. DRINK WATER

It’s always a good idea to drink more water – typically the average human doesn’t drink enough. But as you increase your daily intake of fruit and veggies its key to stay hydrated in order to combat any unwanted side effects.

7. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TRY NEW THINGS

Remember Veganuary is an opportunity to expand your horizons. Once you’re comfortable with your simple substitutions and everyday alternatives, try new things. Veganism isn’t just about oat milk and veggie steaks.

8. JOIN A SUPPORT GROUP OR DO IT WITH A FRIEND

A support group can be a great way to find new recipes, find helpful tips, and share your experiences. But they’re not for everybody, so if a support group just isn’t your thing, get a friend to try it with you.

9. FINALLY; THINK ABOUT WHY YOU’RE GOING VEGAN

Don’t make a lifestyle change in a whim. Do some online research, read a book on veganism, or watch a few documentaries on Netflix. Be informed about the decision and the impact it makes on animals, the environment and your health. There are many reasons to go vegan, but there needs to be a driving-force behind the decision that keeps you motivated.

I think it’s important to stress this is a 31-day challenge, you make the choice if you want to continue with the lifestyle after January. Maybe you don’t, maybe you just make more conscious decisions, or go vegan a few times a week. Some people find veganism really easy, and for others it’s difficult and that’s okay. Regardless, this month you’ve tried and that’s amazing.

New year, new plants

Taking decorations down after the festive period can leave our homes feeling a little empty so there’s no better time than January to add some much-needed flare to our homes with houseplants.

Set the tone for 2022 by adding different varieties of plants to your indoor space which guarantee to create a relaxing atmosphere to start the new year off right.

Senior Houseplant Buyer at Dobbies, the UK’s leading Garden Centre retailer, Claire Bishop is encouraging customers to start – or add to – their houseplant collection and reap the benefits of the added greenery.

Claire has shared her top tips on her favourite houseplants, and where she recommends you place them for maximum effect.

Tropical rainforest bathroom

Create a sanctuary in your bathroom by styling multiple houseplants around the space for a relaxing rainforest feel whilst soaking in the bathtub. The Calathea is a great choice for this space as not only does it feature visually striking foliage, but it also works as great air purifier. Tillandsia, also known as Spanish Moss, is also a fantastic plant for the bathroom, with long wiry stems that add dimension to wall spaces.

By choosing fresh foliage in your bathroom and introducing climbing plants, you can create a tropical vibe that will have you imagining you’re bathing in the tropics.

Make a statement in the living room

Our living rooms form the heart of the household, where we come together as a family to spend quality time with one another. Houseplants are a great way to brighten up these spaces and can work well to complement your existing home décor. An apothecary glass cabinet filled with rare houseplants can really make a statement in a room and create a showstopping display guaranteed to impress guests. Claire recommends layering different sizes of plants to create a full effect, such as Monsteras, Calatheas and Syngonium Podophyllum Albo.

Another easy way to make a statement in your living room is by styling a few large plants together in a corner for a pop of colour and life. By layering different textures and heights with plants like Monstera and Dypsis, you can create a dramatic effect that will elevate your interiors and purify the air at the same time.

Bring zen to your home office

With a lot of people continuing to work remotely, our home office spaces deserve some TLC. The area we work in should be filled with things that help us increase our productivity, and plants do just that.

Houseplants have been proven to have major mood-boosting power, leaving people feeling overall happier by their presence. Claire suggests sprucing up the shelves above your desk with some small potted plants to bring a sense of zen your home office.

Breathe life into small spaces

If you’re working with limited space, or simply want to add some low-fuss greenery to your coffee table, Claire suggests grouping together Succulents or small plants to create a mini jungle you can personalise to suit your style. Succulents such as the Echeveria and Euphorbia require little watering, meaning they’re perfect for first-time plant parents or those looking for some low-maintenance greenery to brighten up their living space.

Potted plants like Sansevieria and Haworthia are also great for styling in smaller spaces and can be arranged on a side table to bring a pop of fun to your home.

Getting your garden winter ready with Dobbies

The New Year brings a fresh start for all, including our gardens. Winter is a great time to prep your outdoor space for the warmer seasons, and Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre retailer, has outlined the best gardening jobs to get stuck into during winter on their latest podcast.

In episode 21, Winter gardening tips, guest host and Dobbies’ Ambassador, Daisy Payne chats to Dobbies’ Horticultural Director, Marcus Eyles to find out what people can be doing in winter to prepare their gardens for spring and summer.

Tidy up

Dobbies’ Ambassador, Daisy Payne

Marcus said: “We’re in that period where we want to be cutting back our herbaceous plants and getting rid of a lot of the debris that’s around. Do think about keeping some of the seed heads and branches that can give you some structure in the garden though, don’t go too crazy on tidying up.”

Mulching is a great way to get your garden looking polished in winter. Daisy said: “Mulching is one of my favourite things to do in the garden. One of the things I really love about it is that in itself, it tidies the garden up a bit and gives it a completeness in your borders and where you’ve got all your plants.”

Planting

A lot of people think that winter is a time to shut down in the garden, however Marcus points out that there are still plenty of options for those looking to do some planting. “In winter, you can plant Skimmia, which is a fantastic hardy shrub with beautiful flowers that look like berries at this time of year because they’re really tight and red. You can also plant winter Heathers.” When discussing where best to place plants, Marcus recommends arranging winter containers near your back door so you can admire them from the comfort of your home without having to step outside.

Dobbies’ Ambassador, Daisy Payne

Grow your own

Growing vegetables is something you can make a start on in winter and something that Marcus recommends if you’d like to reap the benefits early in the year. Marcus said: “It’s a bit more of a challenge to grow vegetables in winter but things like broad beans can still be planted and protected with a cloche, as well as onions and garlic, and green crops like winter gem lettuce will tolerate lower temperatures. Just make sure you check on varieties and give them as much protection as possible.”

Pruning

Another important job for during the winter months is pruning to ensure any harsh weather doesn’t interfere too much with your garden. Marcus recommends taking the stems down by half to stop the wind catching plants, and then in spring, suggests pruning back the fresh shoots which will give a nice structure for the plants ready to flower next year.

Head over to Spotify or iTunes to listen to the podcasts and get more hints and tips on how to get your garden looking its best this winter. Browse all Dobbies podcast episodes here.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 10 Recap: The UK’s Next Drag Superstar

Season 3 queens Ella Vaday, Kitty Scott-Claus, and Krystal Versace fought fiercely in this years final, and after weeks of competition one has been crowned the UK’s Next Drag Superstar.

Last week, Vanity Milan was asked to sashay away after the co,edgy roast challenge which also saw the return of all the eliminated queens for a reunion just before the final.

Going into the final, the now established top 3 queens Ella, Kitty and Krystal had eight RuPeter badges between them with Ella sitting at four, and Kitty and Krystal both on two. While Ella believing her four challenge wins put her as the front runner to win the crown, the competition is always full of surprises.

This week the top 3 queens were challenged to write their own verses to RuPauls “Hey Sis, It’s Christmas” and perform the song on the main stage. As on of the winners of the girl group challenge, Ella Felt confident heading into the challenge, Kitty also felt confident going into the challenge as a diehard fan of girl groups, while Krystal wasn’t too thrilled about the challenge but as always tackled it head on.

Each queen took a different approach to their verse, Ella went holiday-themed with a naughty twist, Kitty had fun, fun, fun with her verse and much like the Fugly Beauty Pageant Challenge, we had fun because she had fun and despite Krystal’s reservations, her verse was on-brand, sexy and executed very well.

The finalists took to the runway for the last time. Ella wearing a purple gown looked more like she was going to a prom in the 50s, and we’re not too sure of this is representative of her best drag — especially considering some of the amazing outfits she’s worn this season.

Kitty looked stunning on the runway and this might be the most beautiful she’s looked the whole season. Hands up if you want to see Kitty play Cinderella? 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

Naturally the fashion queen of the season looked on point. Krystal slayed the runway in a gorgeous black gown with gold embellishments. Let’s be real, for 19 this kid is going places.

RuPaul asked the queen to lip sync one more time before announcing the winner of the season, to the iconic “You Don’t Own Me” by Dusty Springfield. Again each queen took on a different approach to the song, Ella was fairly reserved in her performance, which may have been because of her dress which restricted movement. Kitty who seemed to think ahead, wore a tear away skirt so was able to freely move around the stage and went down more of a comedic route interacting with the other queens which made quite an impact on stage, while Krystal again restricted by her dress wasn’t able to move much but did convey a lot of passion in her performance and used the stage to her advantage.

It seemed the winner was chosen early on, but Ru always likes to give the queens a fighting chance. But, Krystal was a strong competition throughout the competition and as Ru stated earlier in the season she was “born to do drag” and was crowned the UK’s Next Drag Superstar.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 9 Recap: The Pearly Gates Roast

The semi-finals saw, Kitty Scott-Claus, Krystal Versace, Vanity Milan and Ella Vaday take to the stage in a comedy roast where they would have to read themselves, the judges and the audience filled with eliminated queens.

Following the non-elimination, the top four were happy to still be in the competition but voiced their concerns that Vanity had not yet been eliminated and had the least amount of badges – among that her badge had been the result of a group win not an individual challenge.

The next morning in the workroom Krystal was not feeling well but appeared determined to rise to any challenge and with that Mama Ru announced this weeks main challenge; a stand-up comedy roast where they would have to roast themselves, the judges panel, including special guest judge Kathy Burke and the season 3 eliminated queens. as the winner of the most badges and current front runner, Ru have Ella the task of assigning the running order of the show.

While non of the queens have experience with stand-up comedy, Kitty and Ella have proven themselves as Comedy queens throughout the competition.

With that, Ella chose to play tactically when assigning the running order, placing the weakest person first, Krystal and then herself ensuring she’d look good, then Vanity and closing with Kitty.

On the main stage Ru was joined by Michelle Visage, Alan Carr and Kathy Burke.

Krystal came out first, with a set that include jokes mostly about age and her virginity and making digs at the judges for having none of those things. There was laughter from the judges panel but it didn’t seem to be at Krystal’s jokes, more so at the awkward tension that was building up in the room because of how unfunny it was. When Krystal “joked” at Veronica making another age related comment, Veronica heckled with “the only thing getting old are these jokes.” Which was the funniest part of Krystal’s whole performance and when your hecklers are funnier than you, it’s not a good sign.

Ella proved herself a strong competitor, she was confident, walked away from the podium using much of the stage for her performance and never looked at her notes. She truly embraced the challenge, roasting the judges and her fellow queens.

Vanity is not a comedy queen… she spent her time defending her choice of constantly wearing Orange on the runway, it wasn’t a roast and it wasn’t funny. Naturally this spurred on some heckling from the other queens and for a moment Vanity came off script and started going in on the crowed but just as quickly as it started it ended — WHY? For a moment Vanity’s train wreck of a roast could have been saved if only she had brought more of that badass diva to the stage.

When Kitty hit the mic her confidence was the first thing you noticed, however it became quickly noticeable that she was reading from a script and she constantly needed to refer to her notes which partly took away from the experience. But, she WAS funny and in comparison to Krystal and Vanity she smashed it.

After the roast, the girls walked the catwalk in the “Oh My Goddess” category.

During critiques the judges loved Krystal’s runway but were unimpressed with her limited subject matter in her roast wishing she had made more than just age jokes. The judges were proud of Ella’s performance and noted how sharp her jokes were. Vanity was critique for playing it safe and not following through when she went in on the crowd. While Kitty was called “superior” by Kathy but was clocked for looking at her notes so much.

Backstage the girls were surprised with video messages from their loved ones back home. Ella heard from her boyfriend, Kitty got a message from her parents, Krystal saw her parents and siblings, and Vanity was greeted by a message from her husband.

Once back on the main stage, Ella was announced the winner of the challenge, extending her frontrunner status with four badges. Next, Ru announced Kitty as safe and have her a deserved spot in the finale.

That left Vanity and Krystal to lip sync for the last spot in the top three.

However, after three previous trips to the bottom the only thing that could have saved Vanity a fourth time was Krystal bombing — which she didn’t. Therefore, Ru had no other choice but to give Krystal the spot in the finale say “sashay away” to Vanity.

Eight simple ways to stay warm this winter without putting the heating on

Heating your home all winter can be costly. But it’s a necessary cost to keep you and your family warm.

So, to keep your heating bills in check this season try these eight simple tips.

1. INVEST IN BLANKETS

To stay warm keep your bedding game strong. But remember textile “trap” heat which means there needs to be heat to trap in the first place.

2. UTILISE YOUR CURTAINS

When the sun is out keep your curtains open so the warmth can shine onto the glass and create a slight warming effect but at night close them to add extra insulation against the cold.

3. DRESS IN LAYERS

Everyone knows in winter you should dress in layers when you’re outside. However, this can apply to inside as well.

4. RUGS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND

Heat can escape through floor boards. To prevent this, use rugs made of fabric which offer insulation.

5. WEAR THICK SOCKS OR SLIPPERS

Keeping your feet warm will make your whole body feel warmer.

6. USE THE OVEN AND STOVE FOR COOKING

The oven and stove both generate heat in your kitchen.

Every time you use your oven during the colder months, leave it open after you’re done.

7. HOT WATER BOTTLES AND HEATING PADS

They’re inexpensive and can make a huge difference when you’re cold.

8. HOT DRINKS

Keep your favourite hot drinks on hand for when you’re feeling cold. They will keep you toasty and a hot mug is great for heating cold hands.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 8 Recap: Bra Wars

After Scarletts eliminations last week, Kitty was momentarily sad to see to best friend in the competition go home however couldn’t hide her excitement having finally won a challenge — noting that she had a badge and a sash.

Feeling untouchable from her win she asked the other queens who she thought would be the next to go home, with the group consensus being Vanity who “has the most to prove” after being in the bottom three times.

When Ru arrived in the werkroom the next morning to announce the maxi challenge he informed them, it would be an overacting challenge in a sci-fi spoof film, “Bra Wars: The Fempire Claps Back.” As the winner of the previous challenge, Kitty would assign the roles which included, Braberella, She3PHoe, Daft Shader and Baby Yolo.

Kitty decided early on she would be strategic about how she would assign the roles, after choosing the lead role of Braberella for herself she asked asked each queen to audition to for the roles they wanted to play. Krystal ended up playing She3PHoe, the one role she didn’t want as she believed it was too predictable, while Ella Vaday was assigned Daft Shader and Vanity as Baby Yolo.

Once everyone had their role they split off to learn their lines. Vanity’s Baby Yolo character would require her to perform from a box, challenging her to act only with her head, while Krystal was concerned learning and remembering her lines due to her dyslexia. While Kitty and Ella who have theatre backgrounds felt more comfortable with their roles and even seemed excited for the challenge.

While filming on set with Michelle Visage, all four queens needed more direction than they thought. Kitty had a difficult time remembering her lines, particularly the line “space nut milk” which at times came out more innuendo-like than intended. While Vanity struggled to find the best way to emote using only her face. Ella seemed to be thrown by the fact that she was on a secondary set away from the other girls, while Krystal was overthinking her character performance leading her to forget her lines.

Back in the werkroom as the girls prepared for the runway, they discussed their experiences with sexual harassment, describing the instances where they’ve been groped in inappropriate places without consent while in drag.

On the runway, Ru was joined by Michelle, Graham Norton and this week’s guest judge Russell Tovey. This weeks category on the runway was “Scene Stealers.”

During critiques, Michelle mentioned that Krystal struggled the most during filming, but she took the direction well. Ella fulfilled the Bret of scene stealers and impressed the judges for her daring Oompa Loompa concept. They also enjoyed her performance in the film. Vanity’s look did not go down well with the judges, having worn a recycled wig and worn orange AGAIN, however they did think she was able to emote well as Baby Yolo. Kitty’s performance was labelled a “triumph” and the judges liked that her runway presentation told a story.

After deliberations, Ru told the queens that they made it “extremely difficult.” First she announced Vanity as safe, which shocked the other girls since they assumed she’d be up for elimination. Next Krystal was announced as safe, leaving Kitty and Ella in the bottom and apparently lip syncing. However, Ru then revealed that no queen would be going home — instead Kitty and Ella would be competing to decided a winner.

Lip syncing to “Something New” by Girls Aloud. Clearly the happiness and excitement of knowing nobody was going home, the queens gave it their all and Ru was so impressed with their performance, they both walked away winners!

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 7 Recap: Miss Fugly Beauty Pageant

This week the final five raced against the clock in a quick-change challenge to present three looks in a Miss Fugly Beauty Pageant.

The queens were given the hint of getting “drop dead ugly,” and were presented with a three-look challenge in the Miss Fugly Beauty Pageant, where FUGLY stands for “Friend, U Gotta Love Yourself.”

As if the idea of presenting ugly fashion on the runway wasn’t daunting enough, the queens would be racing against the clock with only a moments notice as to what each category would be.

Their first category: Fugly Swimwear and 69 minutes on the clock to get ready before their runway presentation.

While getting ready the girls talked about their lives outside of Drag Race. Kitty spoke about how she’s never let online trolls ruins her confidence and has always chosen to love herself because that’s the way she was raised. Krystal confided in the group that being i drag empowers her and makes her feel sexy, and even expressed that she’s a virgin which surprised the queens.

On the runway, Ru was joined by Michelle Visage, Alan Carr and special guest judge Alesha Dixon. First down the runway was Vanity in a yellow padded swimsuit, yellow wig and back swim cap. Kitty followed in a mixed print swimsuit with fake teeth and a crimped wig. Scarlett played crazy cat-lady with a pink suit and friendly feline friends. Ella also wore a mixed print suit with fake teeth but paired it with a black wig and Krystal decided to go out her comfort-zone with creature from the black lagoon vibes.

The second category: Charity Shop Chic included the queens styling outfits from a charity shop set up backstage. Each queen was required to wear at least five items and given 60 minutes to get ready.

Backstage the queens were surprised by a special guest appearance by Charity Shop Sue, the Selina Mosinski character Krystal portrayed in the Snatch Game last week.

While most of the girls spent time choosing their fugly fashion, Krystal ran down the clock removing and changing her sea creature makeup to look more glam for the runway.

Kitty walked the runway first in a lime green and lavender ensemble. Krystal looked ready for a night on the town, in a little black dress — having spent so much time on her makeup the outfit looked more of an after thought. Ella went full Charity shop chic in a pastel green dress and yellow necklace while Vanity came out in an orange off the shoulder dress. Scarlett also chose a little black dress in a rather less is more approach that didn’t quite work.

For the final category: Fugly But Fashionable, Ru gave them 30 minutes to return to the Werk Room and switch into their most fashionable fugly look.

Ella walked first in purple and yellow plaid chaps and a matching side-shawl. Vanity came next in an oversized black puffer dress with all black accessories. Krystal put together a colorful jacket and wig with cartoon eyes and lips. Scarlett followed in a pink and leopard tracksuit with a silver puffer jacket. Kitty walked last wearing braces and a “Kitty Lady” caftan that tore away revealing a school girl top and skirt.

Overall the queens received positive critiques from the judges, noting that Kitty had fun with all three challenges and had a strong night. They liked the fact that Scarlett also seemed to have fun with the challenges this week after let’s say her recent negativity, Michelle enjoyed that Ella was beginning to show more personality and the judges appreciated Krystal pushing boundaries with her sea creature swimwear look.

Backstage the girls mutually agreed that the day was fun because of the pressure of the time limits but also quite tiring, Krystal was unusually quiet due to the fact that none of the girls chose her looks as their favourites on the runway and argued that they didn’t make any of their looks “fashionable.”

This week Kitty was over the moon to finally receive a RuPeter badge after being named the winner of the Fugly Beauty Pageant. Krystal and Ella were both safe which leaf Vanity and Scarlett in the bottom two and up for elimination. They were asked to lip sync to “Scandalous” by Mis-Teeq. Unlike last week, this lip sync left the judges gagged but it was unlikely Ru was going to grant another double-save and with a decision made, Scarlett was asked to sashay away.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 6 Recap: Snatch Game

This week on Drag Race UK was the episode fans wait all season for, Snatch Game and it ended in a truly shocking elimination.

UK queens have set high standards in previous seasons with their celebrity impersonations such as Baga Chipz as Margaret Thatcher and The Vivienne as Donald Trump in season one and in season two, Bimini Bon-Boulash slayed as Katie Price bringing us tag lines like: “The eyes are the nipples of the face.”

Season 3, episode 6 kicked off with the reading challenge and emotions were still bubbling high for Scarlett Harlett who used the opportunity to “get a few things off her chest.”

Ru used the walk through with the queens after announcing Snatch Game to throw a few hints in the direction they should go. It appeared as if RuPaul dropped hints for every queen to change their initially chosen celebrity and most took on the advice, except Choriza May who Ru recommended to play Cher. However, having never done a Cher performance before and not feeling confident enough Choriza went for her original choice Margarita Pracatán. During the walkthrough, Ru convinced Ella Vaday to do Nigella Lawson, Kitty Scott-Claus to do Gemma Collins, and Scarlett Harlett to do Macaulay Culkin. While, River Medway played Amy Childs, Vanity Milan played Jocelyn Jee Esien, and Krystal Versace played Selina Mosinski.

It became clear early on that Ella and Scarlett were standouts among the queens, between Ella’s saucy Nigella innuendos and Scarlett’s Christmas classic Home Alone puns. Despite Scarlett’s performance being a little repetitive continued to make Ru last which after all is the aim of the game. Kitty as Gemma Collins naturally stood out for all the right reasons, and received great feedback from the judges on the main stage with: “I think you did Gemma Collins better than Gemma Collins.”

Choriza and River were critiqued for learning their characters and playing what was already funny, as a pose to pushing the character boundaries and being funny.

During critiques RuPaul announced Ella was the prime example of what to do in the Snatch Game if you want to win Snatch Game and won her second RuPeter badge. Ru also praised Krystal for being so young and pushing herself out of her comfort zone during the main challenge, saying: “You were born to be a Drag Queen.”

In the end, Choriza and River were asked to lip sync for their lives to the tune of “Shout” by Lulu. The performance was one of the sloppiest in Drag Race herstory. Both queens were like dears in headlights and flailed around on stage as if they had never seen the show or known what a lip sync was… and to do that in front of RuPaul and LuLu — wow! It was truly no surprise when Ru asked them both to sashay away.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 5 Recap: Draglexa

This week delivered a first in Drag Race UK history when Mama Ru announced no winners of safe queens after the maxi challenge meaning every contestant was up for elimination and Ru posed the famous question to the group: “Who do you think should go home tonight?” Scarlett Harlett received the most votes from her fellow queens which lead to her walking off set during Untucked.

The queens were challenged to a branding and acting challenge to advertise the “Draglexa”. A comedy challenge with endless opportunities, however from the start it appeared that each team was unable to work cohesively and come up with any original ideas. It became apparent in rehearsals this was not going to be a shining moment for them.

Both teams failed to impress the judges or tickle their funny bone and got harsh critique for their performances. After deliberations Ru announced five queens who would be safe this week: Choriza May, Ella Vaday, Kitty Scott-Claus, Krystal Versace, River Medway. But they were issued a warning from RuPaul: “As you step to the back of the stage, keep one thing in mind: step your p***ies up.”

Scarlett, Charity, and Vanity were the only queens left in front of the judges having received the votes from the other queens prior to deliberations.

“You’ve been playing it safe,” RuPaul told Scarlett. “You’ve been playing the same note,” RuPaul told Charity. “You’ve been playing a game of catch-up,” RuPaul told Vanity.

In the end, the bottom two was once again Charity and Scarlett — and because nobody went home last week, Ru made sure they understood one of them would be leaving the competition.

Scarlett and Charity went head to head in a lip sync to “Big Spender” by Shirley Bassey. Charity relied on her quirks which didn’t quite translate on the stage, while Scarletts passionate performance and formal attire fit the song. It was Charity who was asked to sashay away.

Underdogs, Choriza May, Ella Vaday, River Medway, and Vanity Milan thus far have made little impact in the competition having only won badges as part of a group challenge, but have yet to prove themselves as individuals.

Tensions are riding high between the queens after Untucked, and it’s likely we’ll see some of that spill into next weeks episode which will feature the reading challenge and THE SNATCH GAME.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: Big Drag Energy

This week the queens were challenged to form two girl groups, each team were given the same song “BDE” (Big Drag Energy) but had to perform either a “top pop” version or “power bottom” version.

All the girls were surprised to see Veronica Green eliminated from competition so early, but agreed that Vanity deserved to win her lip sync.

The next day Ru arrived to announce the maxi challenge giving Scarlett and Vanity the role of team captains and let them choose their own teams. Scarlett chose Kitty Scott-Claus, Charity Kase, and Krystal and Vanity chose Ella Vaday, River, and was left with Choriza – who wasn’t too happy about being picked last. The song would be mixed into two versions, one uptempo and one mid-tempo power ballad, and they would all have to write their own verse.

Last week’s winner, Scarlett got to listen to arrangements before the other queens and choose which one she wanted to take for her team. It came by no surprise that she chose the pop version of the song leaving Vanity’s team with the power ballad.

While in the werk room the queens were treated to a surprise appearance of UK pop group Steps, members H, Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans and Faye Tozer for a little music mentoring.

Scarlett’s groups, The Slice Girls was the first in the studio but seemed to struggle finding coherence, especially with charity’s witchy character. Despite dubbing themselves the underdogs, Vanity’s group Pick’n’Mix, did well in their recording session. Ella struggled in parts but with emotional lyrics from Vanity and River and energy from Choriza their chances looked good.

The Slice Girls also stumbled while rehearsing their choreography, even knowing that their group lacked strong dancers they over complicated their steps and failed to listen to advice from their instructors. Pick’n’Mix faired better in choreography, and kept in mind the advice that with power ballads that the key is to not leave the audience feeling bored.

While they go ready for the main stage Ella and River discussed how important it was for their lyrics meant to them, and River opened up about recently loosing her mother to COVID-19.

This week, Ru was joined by Michelle Visage, Alan Carr, and special guest judge Emma Bunton.

First to performed “BDE” was The Slice Girls and it was clear early on that the judges were not loving what they were seeing. An unfortunate moment for the group was Scarlett forgetting the words to her own verse and rolling her eyes on stage – as well as missing marks for the choreography. The power ballad of “BDG” from Pick’n’Mix was slower and impressed the judges more with its simple choreography and happy energy.

On the runway, the queens dressed to impress with “Night of 1000 Spice Girls” with Krystal opening in a baby blue fur coat as Baby Spice. The only Spice Girl not represented on the runway was Posh Spice and if any queen was to pull of Victoria Beckham we would have thought it would be Krystal. But apparently no queen was was up to that challenge.

Based on their performances and runway looks, Pick’n’Mix were declared the winners of this weeks challenge and each got themselves a RuPeter badge. That meant that The Splice Girls were all up for elimination, Charity was critiqued for her outfit choice during the performance and her witchy character while Scarlett was was called out for rolling her eyes on stage when she messes up. However, they weren’t hard on her, but made the point of not letting her disappointment show.

In the end it was Charity and Scarlett in the lip sync, battling it out to Spice Girls song “Who Do You Think You Are?” This was a hard lip sync to watch, with two strong queens in the bottom who clearly had a lot more to show in the completion. Well clearly Ru thought so too, because no queen went home! We got a double save. After Victoria Scone went home early due to her knee injury, it was likely a double save was in the cards in order to keep the show on track with its running order. It’s a little bit of a surprise that Ru didn’t use it to save Veronica Green, but we are glad to see Scarlett and Charity given a second chance this week.

Drag Race UK Season 3 Episode 2 Recap: Great Outdoors

At the end of last weeks episode, RuPaul asked Victoria Scone to see a medical professional about her knee injury. The request put her spot in the competition in jeopardy and for the queens and viewers, Victoria’s fate was left unknown.

The beginning of episode 3, Ru arrived to reveal this weeks challenge. However, the bad news came first, informing the queens that Victoria had to leave the competition as she had not been cleared by the medical team to continue. The news was greeted with sadness by the cast, but like most who are forced to retire early we can assume this won’t be the last we see of Victoria Scone.

Ru presented the mini challenge and this week he asked the queens to present a live “butch drag” profile for the new social media app findhr. The queens were given a few minutes to get into “quick drag” as straight men and then described themselves using gags, double on tundras and high-pitched voices. It was Scarlett Harlett’s angry man vibe that tickled Ru’s funny bone the most giving her the advantage in the maxi challenge.

With Krystal having won the first two maxi challenges the queens were eager to prove themselves this week. Presenting two “campy” looks on the runway for “Happy Camper” and “Campfire Couture” where they would have to design an outfit using unconventional materials associated with outdoor camping including picnic tablecloths, sleeping bags, tents, umbrellas, pads and fake plants.

While the queens worked on their design, Ru came back with Raven for a check-in. Naturally the queens took the chance to get some makeup tips from Ru’s personal MUA and Emmy winner Raven, getting advice on nose contouring, minimising grease and how to reduce squareness in their bone structure.

The strongest sewers in the room, Charity, River Medway and Veronica Green became hot spots for advice from the other girls. However, it was while helping Kitty that Charity opened up about a night from her past where she was taken advantage of and contracted multiple STIs including HIV. She took the opportunity to discuss the stigma of being HIV positive and how it’s negatively impacted her ability to form relationships and the loneliness that surrounds her. She explained drag was her way of finding vulnerability and excitement after such a dark period.

On the main stage, Ru was joined by Michelle Visage, Graham Norton and this week’s guest judge Nicola Coughlan. The first category was Happy Campers in the Great Outdoors followed by Campfire Couture. Based on their two looks, Kitty, River and Charity were declared safe but were surprised that Charity were not among the top queens.

Krystal once again got praise from the judges and the some of the queens felt like she didn’t deserve it considering she got so much help with her costume from the others in the workroom. However, that wasn’t the old shade thrown, as Vanity who was not among the tops of the week, lashed out at Scarlett saying her designed look could have been “bought off the rack.”

The judges however, didn’t agree as Scarlett was the winner of this weeks maxi challenge for her design, with Krystal just shy of her third win. While, Vanity and Veronica were left lip syncing for their life to “I’ve Got the Music in Me” by The Kiki Dee Band. Vanity saved herself for the second time in two weeks, with Veronica grateful for her second chance being asked to sashay away.
